SCARBOROUGH slimming clubs can look forward to a boom period now that the 94 members and friends of Scarborough Indoor Bowling Club have returned from enjoying an active holiday at Potters Leisure Resort on the Norfolk coast.
To appreciate Potters one has to have been there, for everything is first class - especially the food. So we all returned with a few extra pounds on our waistlines, despite having played at least four games of bowls during the stay.
The group - which included bowlers and non-bowlers, singles, couples and families - arrived at the multi-million pound holiday village by Coast and Country coaches, car and rail, and ages ranged from a few months to the over-80s.
Our players took part in a fours competition against teams from clubs from throughout the country. Teams played four games each on some of the 14 indoor rinks at the five-star complex.
There were some exceptional performances by the Scarborough contingent.
In their opening match against strong opponents, John Yeadon, Angela Leach, Margaret Lee and skip Geoff Bint found themselves one shot behind as they went into the last end, but then took the honours by claiming a seven.

and Harry Brown, Jonny Stanger (15) and skip John Hall (14) - had three wins out of their four games, including results of 17-4 and 22-5 and won the admiration of spectators for their skill and conduct on the green. On being congratulated on their 'professionalism' one of the lads was reported as saying it was a tribute to the influence of their coach, Mike Preston. Inspirational, Mike!
Another big early victory, by 34 shots to three, was achieved by Wendy Campion, Joyce Ryder, Paul Buchanan and skip Albert Mouser.
And there were other fine performances, but I couldn't be everywhere!
After the 336 players in 84 teams had completed their allotted four games, the top teams went into the knock-out stage.
Scarborough had nine of the 16 teams in the knock-outs:
1 Peter and Sandra Lees and Mel and Margaret Riley;
2 John Yeadon, Margaret Lee, Angela Leach and Geoff Bint;
3 Maurice and Mary Dove and Cyril and Cynthia Wroe;
4 Catherine Brown, Mary Feuerhelm, Jim Merriman and Wes Webster;
5 George and Dot Preston, Joan Colley and Bob Dickens;
6 Peter Johnson, Wynne Jackson, Margaret Fletcher and Brenda Foster;
7 Bernice, Adie and Jack Bird and Jean Else;
8 Paul Buchanan, Wendy Campion, Joyce Ryder and Albert Mouser;
9 Peter and Jackie Claypole and John and Diane Weatherall.
The teams 1, 2 and 3 above all won through to the quarter-finals, but then our luck started to run out. Only the Geoff Bint-skipped team won through to the semis, where they were beaten by a team from Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, who won a similar Potters competition last year.
In an exciting final which required an extra end after an 8-8 result on eight ends, Great Shelford beat a Doncaster team who have won four consecutive Easter EIBA competitions at Potters.
So none of us progressed as far as George and Dot Preston and Peter and Sue Brook who were the beaten finalists in the 2008 competition.
Nevertheless, a great time was had by all - thanks again to the hard work of our organiser, Albert Mouser, and his non-stop concern for everybody's enjoyment.
