Chris Turnbull to represent England in the World Blind Bowls Championships in Australia - April 2009
A local blind bowler recently beat four other contenders to secure the opportunity of representing England in the World Blind Bowls Championships to be held in Melbourne, Australia in April 2009.

Chris Turnbull, a member of the Scarborough Indoor Bowls Club and Filey Outdoor Bowls Club and National Visually Impaired Singles Champion in 2006, won this great opportunity after recently beating National winners from 2005 to 2008 in an invitation round robin tournament.

With each match played to 21 shots or 2 and a half hours, his first win with a final score of 21 –8, was against Keith Brenton from Newcastle, the reigning

World Champion from the last Championships in South Africa in 2005.
Henry Edwards from Preston, the 2008 National Winner was the next person to be beaten with a score of 21 – 13.
Chris then won against UK Champion Steve Simmonds from London with a score of 21- 12. The last man to be beaten by Chris was Eric Shackleford from Bridgewater, the National Champion in 2005, who stormed ahead with an early lead of 9 – 3 before Chris came back to win 21 – 13.

Chris, who was a Junior School PE teacher in Leicester for twenty-six years until he was registered blind in 1990 said, "I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to represent England in the Men's Singles in this World Championship next year. Now there is only the money to find as the English National Association of Visually Handicapped Bowlers, receives no funding at all. I estimate that the total costs for my helper and me will be in the region of £5,000."

Always a keen sportsman Chris only took up bowls in 1996 and finds that bowls is one of the few games in which he can compete on an equal basis with sighted players.

If anyone or company can help Chris in his quest to raise £2,000 to represent England, he can be contacted on

Scarborough pair knocked out of National Over 55's Competition
No open bus tour I'm afraid. We lost to a pair not as good as some we have beaten but better than us on the day. We played Barry O'Hare and partner from Workington in the Area Over 55 Pairs Final. If we had won we would have been in the last 16 in the country and would be cancelling our holidays to go down to Worthing to the all England Finals.

We had home advantage but, as Workington is more than 100 miles from Filey (Chris's club), we had to play half way between. We played at Richmond and the green was fine, so no excuses on that score either. Actually we went
to Richmond twice – the first time the match was rained off.

When we did actually play we had a terrible start being 2-15 down in no time their skip bowling really well. Then, as it dried out and quickened up, we came back into the match. Peter lead and moved the mat around and we slowly inched (ground) our way to 16-18 down with three ends to go. On the 19th end we were holding three and their skip, who had gone off the boil, with his last wood chipped into one of our three knocking it onto the jack which shot sideways to two of their woods about 5 feet off line. 20-16 down instead of 19-16 up! On the next end we were again holding three when their skip moved the jack and his wood stayed with it. Chris came with a little run and hit their wood onto the jack to our back wood and it cannoned off that to one of theirs. The wood Chris hit then followed up and counted as well. End of story. We were somewhat subdued after that. In fact Peter is writing this as Chris is still depressed! Afterwards we both felt mentally drained with the concentrated effort we had given.
Next year we try again.

Regards - Peter

The Adventurers have returned!
Yes, our intrepid "task force" have made their way back to Scarborough following a (mostly) very enjoyable break at Potters. Our bowlers did very well, we had 7 teams through to the last 16 of the week long competition.
The best performance came from Dot & George Preston and Peter & Sue Brooks who won through to the final! They played VERY WELL and by all accounts were unlucky not to have won!
Pictures of the prize giving ceremony are attached - thanks due to our "event photographer"Joan Gibson.
Congratulations to the "Potter's Hotshotters" team and thanks to Avid Fan for the photos.

This holiday was such a success that we have already booked for 80 participants next year. We are planning to go for 4 days in the week before Easter 2009. (Details from reception once arrangements have been confirmed)

...........and finally............ Liz will be organising her usual "May Bank Holiday Raffle" in the week prior to the early May Bank Holiday . Please call in and support this fundraising event. The star prize is a new AM/FM Radio - CD Player and there will be plenty of other quality prizes to be won. Remember.......you've got to be in it to win it AND all profits go directly into club funds.
