Under 18's Presentation Night - 26th April 2009
L-R Ben Holt Junior handicapped singles winner. Louisa Pratt runner up in junior handicapped & Open singles John Hall winner of Junior Open Singles & Alan Hodges School of Excellence
Under 25 Open pairs competition at Hornsea
On Saturday 18th April we travelled to Hornsea to play in the above competition.
We had two teams in this year. Ben Holt & Jack Bird winners of the plate in this for the last two years, John Hall & Jonny Stanger. Louisa Pratt attended to support and was backup if Ben had not recovered from his ankle injury from a couple of weeks ago. Each match was either 11 ends or 1hr 15mins. John & Jonny were playing against local players Tom & Heather Andrews. The lads started slowly & were soon 8-1 down after 4 ends, no matter what the lads did skip heather was pulling out some very good bowls. On the 5th end dropped another 2 but scored a single on the next now 10 - 2 behind. On the 7th end we really put the pressure on with both lads playing fantastic. On this occasion Heather had a bad end to the dismay of the local supporters. We scored a brilliant 5 shots all round the jack to bring us back into the game only trailing by 3.On the next end the Hornsea pair scored a single but on the 9th end Jonny drew a
Louisa Pratt, Ben Holt, John Hall, Jack Bird & Jonny Stanger
brilliant bowl to win the end with his last bowl. As time was running out the 10th end was going to be the last. So we needed a 3 to tie and take it into an extra end. We started well and were holding 2 shots Jonny was trying to draw another to tie but any movement on the jack would give us a count of 4 and win the match. Unfortunately Jonny just failed so we lost 10-11. A really good game by all 4 players. This meant that John & Jonny would now be in the plate competition.
Ben was able to play with Jack and they were up against the strong Clarke sisters from York. In the early stages there were only 3 shots scored in the first 3 ends we were behind 1-2. Then we picked up a great score of 4, followed by another 4 a single a 5 to stretch their lead to 15-2. When the Emily & Laura did put good bowls in Ben was on form with his running bowls to spoil any chance they had of coming back by "killing? 2 ends in a row. We went on to score another single and a double to lead 18-2 going into the last end, which the girls scored a single for the lads to finish 18-3 . A brilliant score considering the opposition. The lads continued in the main competition.
John & Jonny played their quarter final against Lydia Bowes from Hornsea & England star Zoe Eagles from York. This is now a straight knockout. Again the boys struggled to get the pace in the early stages and were behind 6-0 after 3 ends. On the 4th end were improved and were holding 5 shots only for Zoe to play a good shot and reduce the score to a 3 for us, at least off and running. We followed that up with a single, they replied with a single to retain their 3 shot lead.
We continued to battle away with 2 more singles to close the gap to just one shot. The boys continued to improve and scored a double on the 9th end to go into the lead for the first time in the match 8-7 with again time running out the 10th end was going to be the last. John led with a couple of wonderful bowls which stayed right near the jack, Zoe could only manage second bowl so the boys qualified for the Plate semi final with a win 9 -7.

Ben & Jack were up against Thomas Hall & England player Lauren Copeland (Thornaby)
A very close start with only 5 shots in the first 5 ends the lads 3-2 down. On the 6th end we scored a very good 3 followed by a single with Ben playing another running bowl and moving the jack back to one of our bowls. We were holding 2 shots on the next end but Lauren played a perfect drawing last bowl to count, we led 6-4 again the time was running out and the lads played very well keeping things tight and not letting the lead slip by scoring a single on both ends to win 8-4. Now into the semi of the main.
In the plate semi John & Jonny were up against the Clarke sisters from York who Jack & Ben beat in the first round. The lads started well with Jonny moving the jack for us to score 2 shots. John had 2 bowls within 6inches of the jack and Emily moved them for the girls to score 2 to level it. John again had 2 bowls within 3/4inches and Jonny 's last bowl scored also to pick up a count of 3 followed by a single now leading 6-2. Then disaster we dropped a count of 3 to bring he girls right back to 6-5 behind. Both teams had touchers on the 6th end but we could not make ours count the girls scored another 3 to now lead 8-6. The girls scored again another 2 shots to stretch their lead to 10-6 then another single now the boys were 5 behind and only 2 ends to play.
John played a bowl between 2 of York's to not only get a toucher but Jonny followed it up with a couple of good shots for them to score 4 shots to trail by only one going into the last end. Unfortunately the boys could not just get the shot and lost the end by one shot to lose 12-10 a nerve racking but enjoyable game to watch.
Ben & Jack were against another England player Paul Humphries & David Attwood from York.
On the first end we were holding 3shots but Paul fired and killed the end. On the next end Paul pushed our nearest bowl away for them to score 6 shots. They followed it up with 2 shots on the next 2 ends we were now behind 10-0. The lads kept trying and scored a single after both Jack & Ben having touchers and looking like scoring 2 but Paul again came in and made 2nd bowl with his last bowl. Paul again did the damage on the next end by moving the jack to make 3 shots we are now behind 13-1. We looked in trouble again on the next end but Ben with his last bowl and were 6 down for him to come in and draw shot!
Jack got a toucher on the next end and we scored 2 followed by another 2 with a toucher from Ben. Now 6-13 behind Jack got 2 touchers on the 10th end but we only managed to score 1 now 6 shots behind going into the last end. Ben tried to play his bowls positively to try and make the score more respectable but did not have any luck and we lost the last with a 3 to lose 7-16.
Both our teams knocked out by York teams.
In the Plate final the York sisters won easily 14-2 against Holly & Sam Arundell.
In the main Comp it was also one sided with again the York team Paul Humphries & David Attwood winning 12-5 against Hornsea player Scott Burrell & Thornaby's Ben Suggitt.
A great days bowling by everyone but disappointing to lose in both semi finals.
We have just the John Price Junior Challenge left for this season on the 10th May.

The 10th Champion of Champions singles competition at Hornsea
On Saturday 11th April Louisa Pratt, John Hall & Jonny Stanger as a wildcard entered the 10th annual Champion of Champions singles competition at Hornsea. Each match was either 1hr 10mins or to score 18 shots.
Every player losing their first match would go into a plate comp. Jonny played Emily Clarke from York and after a close start Jonny led 6-5 after 6 ends. Jonny battled and every good bowl he played Emily seemed to pull out a better shot. Emily moved ahead 10-6 then Jonny had 3 ends running with touchers but could not count as either the jack moved to Emily's bowl or she again played a great shot. Jonny lost 7 -18.
John Hall played Daniel Cowap from Thornaby after 8 ends John trailed 5-6. Again John was having the same luck as Jonny. John had 2 bowls less than 8 inches from the jack but Daniel bowled 1 bowl closer! No matter how well John played Daniel had an answer.
Jonny Stanger, Louisa Pratt and John Hall
John lost 8-16 after 1hr 10mins Louisa played Thomas Hall also from Thornaby. Louisa was behind 4-6 after 7 ends after 9 ends each player had scored 2 shots each Lou still behind 6-8. Louisa was holding when Thomas played a bowl with weight and made 2 shots to lead 10-6. Lou came straight back with a 3 all her counting bowls within a foot of the jack! Now 9-10 behind and then went into the lead 11-10 with a score of 2. Thomas came back with 2 shots to go back into the lead by 1 shot then Lou took the next end again with 2 shots to back into the lead by 1 shot now 13-12. Back came Thomas with a score again of 2 to go back into the lead and this time he would not lose another end as he finished the match with 2 more scores of 2 to win 18 -13. A brilliant game to watch.

This meant that all 3 of our players were in the plate comp.
Jonny played against Laura Clarke from York (sister of Emily who won the first match).
It was close in the early exchanges with Jonny behind 3-5 after 4 ends but Laura just had too much experience and ran away with the game 18-5.
John Hall played Tom Andrew from Hornsea after 6 ends it was level at 3 each. Then John had 4 ends running with touchers and led 9-5 then picked up another shot to go 10-5 up. John on the next end put his first bowl in the ditch but corrected to have another toucher and pickup 3 shots.
Tom came back on the next end and he then scored a three to trail 13-8 Tom was holding 4 shots until Johns last bowl saved 2 shots. John took 2 on the next end to lead 15-10 John again had another toucher but could not score Tom picked up a single. Tom was in trouble but came with weight and was off target but fluked to take John?s bowls out and Tom picked up 3 shots to trail by 1 shot 14-15. Going into the last end due to the time john finished with another toucher and scored a single to win a very close game 16-14 John now in the semi final and would play the winner of Louisa's next match.

Louisa was playing Holly Arundel from Selby. Louisa really did not get going and was quickly behind 9-1 Louisa would have been even further behind except for a brilliant last bowl she was 4 down but drew shot bowl.
Holly kept up the pressure and ran out a comfortable winner 18-6.

John had a close start to the semi final level at 4 each after 6 ends. Holly again kept up a fantastic level of bowling and pulled away from John to lead 12-6. John tried everything but could not get close to her and lost 17-10 in the time allowed. Unfortunately Holly had knocked out 2 of our players.
She met her older brother in the plate final this was a close match with Sam the winner 16-15.
In the main comp the final was between 2 sisters from Hornsea Katie & Holly Baxter. Again like the plate it was very close all the way through at the last end it was 15 each with Holly winning the last end.
It is the first time in the 10 years that a girl has won the main competition.

County President Phil Parsons was there to present the trophies and to congratulate all the players on a great days bowling.

The U18 League Semi Final at Selby
Busy Weekend on Sunday we travelled to Selby to play in the U18 League Semi Final against this years League winners York as we finished 4th in the league. Ben Holt travelled also to give support as he was unable to play due to a badly sprained ankle.
Each match was either 15 ends or 2 hours.

On one rink we had John Hall, Jack Bird & Louisa Pratt after 8 ends we were behind 4-6 but York were too strong and ran out 13-6 winners.
On our other rink we had Joseph Mann, Hannah Pacey & Jonny Stanger, unfortunately we had no answer to York?s terrific bowling even tough they never gave up and had a few touchers could not get any luck to run our way & lost 24-3.

Joseph Mann, Ben Holt, Jack Bird, Jonny Stanger, Louisa Pratt, John Hall and Hannah Pacey at theYork League semi final.
In the other semi was 2nd v 3rd in the league Thornaby v Hornsea.
This was won by Thornaby.
So the top 2 teams this season fittingly met in the Final.
Both rinks had close games but Thornaby just kept their noses in front with one rink winning each & one losing a rink the combined totals meant Thornaby won by 5 shots after 2 hours.
The County saw the last of 8 bowlers this season as they will be too old next year including Scarborough's Louisa Pratt & Ben Holt.
Even though it was a disappointing weekend for many of our players it is a good learning curve for the future.
We still have John, Jonny, Jack & Ben (if fit) in the U25 open pairs next Saturday at Hornsea to look forward to.
All teams Thornaby, York, Hornsea & Scarborough
Then the last comp of this season is John Price's Junior Tournament on the 10th May which has 10 teams entered from the region.

U18 Yorkshire Ladies Singles Final
On Sunday 5th April at South Leeds, Louisa Pratt played England player Zoe Eagles from York IBC in the U18 Yorkshire Ladies Singles Final. A repeat of this final 2 years ago which Zoe won so Louisa was out for revenge. This was played over 2 sets of 9 ends each.
Zoe started well winning the first 2 ends with a single & double to lead by 3. On the 3rd end Louisa had 3 bowls surrounding the jack & Zoe with her last bowl rested one of Louisa's bowls for Zoe to take shot.On the 4th end Louisa was holding 1 shot and she unfortunately had a nearly perfect bowl, which touched the jack but moved it to Zoe's bowl to give her the shot.
Now 5 - 0 down.
Louisa stuck to her game and with her last bowl on he 5th end scored a single. Louisa now moved the mat up to shorten the length and was holding 3 shots as Zoe struggled with the length until she adjusted well and played a fantastic last bowl to take shot. This meant that Louisa was looking at getting back to 5-4 if she had scored the 3 shots but it was now 6-1 to Zoe. Zoe took the next 2 ends by only being able to score singles but won the 1st set 8-1.
Zoe Eagles from York IBC (winner) and Louisa Pratt from Scarborough IBC
Even though the score did not show how close most of the ends were as after 8 ends played there was only 9 shots in total scored.Zoe started the 2nd set with a brilliant end scoring 3 shots, followed by a single Louisa continued to battle and touched the jack on the 3rd end but could not stay with the jack to lose 2 shots.
On the 4th Lou again had a toucher but this time the only bit of luck she had all afternoon enabled her to score 2 shots now 6-2 down but on the board. On the next end it was back to the same story unfortunately Lou touching the jack again and still dropped 2 shots. Zoë continued at a very high standard and won the last 2 ends she needed with another 2 & 1 and deserved her victory on the day. Credit to Louisa for battling all the way and never gave up. This was the last time for both girls in this Competition as they will be too old next season.
Louisa will now set her sights on the Champion of Champions U18 singles at Hornsea next Saturday along with John Hall & Jonny Stanger representing our club.

Finals of the Handicapped singles and the Peter Hesp trophy
On Sunday 22nd March the Handicapped singles was held at 10am between Louisa Pratt & Ben Holt.
It was the first to 21 shots, as both players are experienced they both started on scratch (nil) shots.
Louisa was first out of the blocks winning the first 2 ends with 2 shots on each end. Ben taking a single on the 3rd end. Louisa then took the next 2 ends with again 2
shots on each to take an early lead 8-1.
Ben then came back winning the next 7 ends scoring 11 shots to go into a 12-8 lead. Louisa was not playing badly just Ben was pulling out some terrific shots and good conversion bowling.Louisa took the 13th end with a 3 to pull back to 12-11.
It was Ben who continued to play good % shots and no matter what Louisa did Ben had an answer. He went on to take the last 5 ends to run out winning 21-11.
Both players were warmly clapped off the green by the crowds on the balcony for giving a great demonstration of bowling.
2.00pm saw the open singles final for the Peter Hesp trophy who was a junior bowler who sadly died several years ago & the family kindly donated the trophy to be played for each year in his name.
Louisa made it to this final also and on this occasion met John Hall a player in his first final but has made great improvements in the game over the last couple of seasons.
In the early exchanges both players started of well scoring with some excellent bowls at 5 ends it was level at 5 shots each.
Louisa took the next 3 ends with a score of 2 & 2 singles to lead 9-5 John battled back with a brilliant end to core a full house of 4 shots to get level at 9 all.
Louisa came back again to take the next 2 ends with singles to lead 11-9 but back came John with the next 3 ends scoring 2,4,2 to break away to 17-11.
Louisa won the next end with a single, back again came John with 2 more singles to lead 19-12.
On the next end John was holding match lie with a 3 but with Louisa last bowl delivered a perfect bowl to trial the jack back to her 2 waiting bowls to score a 3 closing the gap 19-15.
John held his nerve and again played 2 brilliant bowls on the next end once again lieing match lie, Louisa with her last bowl tried to come in with a running bowl to "kill" the end but to John's relief and with a big sigh Louisa missed to lose her second final of the day this time 21-15.
Again the audience showing their appreciation of the standard of bowls being played by both players. It was a pleasure & privilege to mark both games.
Louisa although disappointed still has another final to attend on the 5th April at Leeds in the Yorkshire Ladies U18 singles, also all the 3 playing today will be in the squad to have a chance of taking on this years league winners York at Selby on the 12th April in the Yorkshire U18 League semi final.
Louisa & John along with Jonny Stanger (wild card) will be playing in the Champion of Champions singles at Hornsea on the 11th April. Followed the Saturday after on the 18th April again at Hornsea will be John, Jonny, Ben & Jack Bird in the U25open pairs competition.
Finally finishing with John Price May Festival Junior Competition on Sunday 10th May, so still plenty of bowling left yet!!

'Alan Hodges' School of Excellence Competition 2009
On Saturday 14th March we ran the 3rd annual Alan Hodges "School of Excellence".
The juniors are split into 2 groups one group for the less experienced & one for the more experienced.
22 turned up and as it was Comic Relief the day before I took the opportunity for us all to wear a red nose or at least something red.
We donated £1 each to play and with donations we raised £40.

On each rink was a different exercise relating to a skill
needed in bowls with the juniors scoring points for how well they did on each task. After nearly 2 hours & 8 different skill challenges we had a tie on 19 points in the Junior section between Charlie Reid & newcomer Georgina Horsham-Batley.
So we had them both bowl one wood & nearest to the jack won. Georgina
went first while Charlie was asked to leave the area so he did not know how well Georgina had done. Anyway Charlie just did not get close enough so Georgina won.
In the senior section again it was close with 3 bowlers battling it out. 3rd place Jack Bird on 24 points, second and Runner up was James Brown on 25 points, winning on 26 points was John Hall.

The winner & runner up in both sections won trophies with John Hall winning the Trophy kindly donated by Joan as his was the highest score in both sections. John has now won this trophy twice as he was the winner in it's first year in 2007.
The winners and runners up of both the junior and senior competitions with Joan Hodges and Mike Preston
Under 18's Captain, Mike Preston thanked the players for taking part and for making it such a success again. He also thanked the helpers and Joan Hodges and family for attending and presenting the trophies and certificates to all the players taking part.

Scarborough win annual 2 wood triple Tournament
All the Competitors from Darlington, York, Hornsea, Thornaby, Selby & Scarborough
On Sunday 11th we held our annual 2 wood triple Tournament for the U18's. There were 16 teams from Darlington, York, Hornsea, Thornaby, Selby & us.
Each match was played in a round robin format, as there were 4 teams in 4 groups. Each match was either ends or 50mins whichever came first.
Scarborough had 13 players taking part so I could substitute players to give them all a game and experience.
Thornaby had two players short for one of their teams, so Harry & James Brown played with their player.
The first match for Scarborough "A" (Jack Bird, Louisa Pratt & skip Ben Holt) was against Selby "B" a very tight game after 6 ends it was level at 4-4 but Selby scored two singles to finish on only 8 ends after 50mins with us losing 6-4.
Our "B" team was Joseph Mann with sisters Jessica & Hannah Pacey, they were against Selby "C" and trailing 5-7 after 7 ends came back strong to score 5shots on the last 2 ends to win 10-7.
Our "C" team was Steven Broadbent, Owen Price & David Sessions, against Thornaby "B". We started well trailing only 3-4 after 5 ends but had one bad end dropping 3 shots on end 6 losing 4-8.
Our made up team was Harry & James Brown with a boy called Ben from Thornaby, they struggled and lost 1-7
In the second round Jack, Louisa & Ben our "A" team were against Darlington "D" and played very consistently and at 6 ends was level at 5 each, we won the next ends with 2 & 1 to win 8-5.
Our "B" team this time Ben Grahamslaw with Hannah & Jessica Pacey were against Hornsea "A" at 6 ends only ones had been scored as it was 3-3. Unfortunately we lost the last 3 ends to lose 3-8.
Our "C" team with Joe Usher, Owen Price, David Sessions came up against a very good Darlington "A"side and we lost 26-0. They kept trying and did not give up which was pleasing to see.
Our made up team of Harry & James Brown with Ben from Thornaby were against Selby "B" and gave them a great .game. We led 6-1 after 4 ends but dropped 5 shots on the 5th end for them to level.
The Scarborough Team Players
We came back again to take the next 2 ends with singles to lead 8-6 but lost a 3 on the last end to lose 8-9 a brilliant performance.
The 3rd game for Jack, Louisa & Ben was against our made up team and our more experienced players were firing on all cylinders and could not let up as shots difference could mean they may not stay in the main comp.
They ran out 20-0 winners but again Harry, James & Ben from Thornaby did not give up.
Our "B" team had Joseph Mann in with Hannah & Jessica Pacey against Darlington "C" another close game trailing 5-7 after 8 ends but lost one shot on the last end 5-8.
Our "C" team with Steven Broadbent, Owen Price & David Sessions never really got a look in against Hornsea "B" losing 4-14.
The top two teams in each group continue in the main competition with the bottom two from each group going into the plate.
So all 16 teams are still in with a chance of progressing in their separate comps. It is a straight knockout and is still 9 ends or 50mins.
Both our "A" & "B" teams made it into the main comp, "A" topping their group & "B" runner up in theirs.
"A" were against Thornaby "B" and we started well leading 11-1 after 4 ends. Thornaby came back well but we held on to win 14-10 now through to the semi finals.
Members of all the winning teams
"B" team were playing Selby "A" they tried really hard but Gen Grahamslaw along with Jessica & Hannah Pacey could not match them and lost 4-13 so they were now out.
"C" team was Joe Usher, Owen Price & David Sessions were against Selby "B" in the plate comp and we again could not match Selby as they ran out 16-5 winners.
Our made up team had a close battle only losing 3-6 to Hornsea "B". This meant that we only had our "A" team left in any comp.
Our semi final was against Selby "A" who had beaten our "B" team in the previous round. We got revenge winning convincingly 12-5 now through to the final. In the other semi York beat Darlington"A" 13-4.
In the plate semi Thornaby "A" beat Selby"B" 7-5 & Darlington "B" beat Hornsea "B" 13-2.
In the 3rd/4th playoff in the main Selby "A" won Darlington "A"7-5 & in the main Hornsea "B" just beat Selby "B" 7-6.
Both finals were an hour long.
In the plate final Darlington "B" had a brilliant game against Thornaby "A? level at 5 each at 6 ends and Darlington winning 9-6.
In the main Jack, Louisa & Ben were up against York and it was another terrific match to think they had been bowling over 5 hours now in the day the standard was still amazing. We started well again leading 6-2 after 5 ends. Then disaster we dropped 4 shots on the next end for York to level it at 6 all.
Both teams had their eyes firmly on that trophy. we kept our nerve & won the next 3 ends scoring ones on each end to now lead 9-6 and with them playing the last end we only needed to keep it tight. We were holding 2 shots early but York played a brilliant bowl to take shot and move one of our bowls well away. This left only one of our bowls near the jack, if they could take that out they would convert the end into scoring 4 shots and win the match. Thankfully they did not succeed and we only dropped the one shot. We won 9-7 for only the second time in our history. The first being in 2001 with a team of Angela & Carole Mclean & Gemma Preston.
Even though I was exhausted running the competition and watching some terrific players from all clubs, I was one proud coach obviously for our winning team but I was proud of all 13 players for the way they all behaved both on & off the green. It was extra special as it is Louisa & Ben's last year as they will be "over the hill" next year & too old.
