Yorkshire U25 Open Pairs Competition at Hornsea
On Saturday 10th April we travelled to Hornsea to play in the Yorkshire U25 Open pairs Competition.
This year we had Nicola Preston & Simon Butcher, John Hall & Jonny Stanger and Jack Bird pairing up with Thornaby's Ben Suggitt.
Each match was either 1hr 15mins or 11 ends.
After the first match all winners stay in the main and the losers go into a plate competition.

Nicola & Simon played a pair from York and after 7 ends led 8-6. On the next end they dropped 3 shots to trail 9-8. They lost the next end with a single and on the last end managed to score only a single to lose a very close game 9-10.
Jack Bird & Ben Suggitt played against local opposition and after 7 ends trailed 6-2. The next two ends saw one shot each so going into the last end they were behind 7-3. They played a terrific end and nearly pulled off a draw but only managed to score 3 shots to lose 7-6.

John Hall & Jonny Stanger were against two locals and as with the other two pairs struggled in the early ends to get going. After 7 ends were behind 11-1 and never gave up but lost 14-7.

All three pairs losing and going into the plate competition.
Nicola & Simon were up against 2 from Hornsea and it was a close game as at the 6th end it was level 3 each. We scored 2 shots on the 7th end with the opposition scored a single. Back came Preston & Butcher with a brilliant 3 and kept the Hornsea pair down to 2 singles on the last two ends, for us to win 8-6.

Ben & Jack were up against 2 from Hornsea and really got out of the blocks quickly and won easily 13-3.

This meant that Ben & Jack were against John & Jonny in the plate semi final. What aclose and good game. After 7 ends Bird & Suggitt led 6-4. Back came Stanger & Hall with a score of 3 to take a lead by one shot. Back came Bird & Suggitt with a single to level it. Jonny & John were not to out done and won the last 2 ends with 2 singles to win 9-7.

Nicola & Simon were in the other plate semi and unfortunately met 2 from York and were in tremendous form as they beat our pair 22-5.

This left John Hall & Jonny Stanger in the plate final against the york pairing.
This was a close affair with our lads starting well leading 8-1 after 5 ends. Back came the York team scoring 6 shots in 2 ends to bring the gap down to 1 shot. Back came our pair with 2 shots. We lost the next ens with 3 shots for it to go into the final end all square on 10 shots each.
The lads did not have any luck on the last end and just missed the jack by a fraction to win but lost 11-10 a great game for the final.

The County Champion of Champions at Hornsea
L-R Jack Bird, Joseph Mann & James Brown
On Saturday 3rd April the County Champion of Champions took place at Hornsea.
This year we had three places Jack Bird, James Brown & Joseph Mann who kindly stood in for John Hall who was not available.
Each singles match was either 1hr 10mins of the first to 18 shots whichever came first.
Following your first match determined whether you stayed in the main comp or if you lose go into a plate comp.

Joseph Mann played against local player Holly Baxter (last years winner).
Joseph started well with a 6-2 lead after 6 ends. Holly came back with 2 singles to cut the gap to 6-4. Joseph took the next with a single. This spurred Holly on to some fantastic bowling winning the next 6 ends scoring 10 shots to lead 14-7. Joseph scored another single, Holly again came back with 3 shots over the next 2 ends when Joseph looked set to score Holly pulled out a brilliant last bowl to take shot.
After 20 ends Holly won 18-10. Joseph therefore went into the plate.

James Brown was up against another Baxter this time sister Katie last years losing finalist. This was like watching the same match that Joseph had just had. James started well leading 4-2 after 5 ends. Katie scored 4 shots on the next 2 ends to lead 6-4. James came back with 4 shots on the next 2 ends to take the lead 8-6. Katie then just stepped up a gear and no matter what James did she won the next 5 ends scoring 10 shots to win 18-8 after 14 ends.
Jack played against James Logan from Selby. This was aclose start also with jack leading 4-3 after 6 ends. Logan scored 2 shots on the next end to lead but Jack won the next 4 ends scoring 5 shots to now lead 10-5. James came back at Jack and scored 3 shots on the next 2 ends to close the gap to just 2 shots. Jack kept his nerve and scored a full house on the next end with James only scoring a single on the last end for jack to win 14-9.
So jack went into the main comp.

Joseph played Hollie Arundel from Selby and started really well against the more experienced player.
After 7 ends Hollie led just 6-5. Hollie won the next 4 ends scoring 8 shots to break away leading 14-5. Joseph scored 2 shots on the next end. Over the next 5 ends only 5 shots were scored which showed how tight it was Joseph scoring 3 to Hollie's 2. Joseph still behing 16-10. Then Joseph put real pressure on Hollie by scoring 3 shots to close the gap to just 3 shots with 2 ends to go. No matter what Joseph did Hollie just had enough to win scoring two singles on the last 2 ends to win 18-13 but she had a scare.
James Brown played against James Logan from Selby. This was another close one after 5 ends it was tide at 4 shots each. On the 6th end James dropped a 4 but bounced straight back taking the next 7 ends and going into a healthy lead 12-8. Unfortunately Logan scored a 3 on the 14th end to close to within one shot. James came back again with a 3 himself to stretch his lead to 4 shots. Logan managed to score 4 shots over the last two ends to tie the game going into the last end. Logan held shot and James played a cracking good bowl & just touched the jack but did not stay close to it. The umpire was called to measure the two bowls to determine the winner. After the measure was completed James lost a very good game from both players.

This just left Jack. He was against local Katie Baxter.
Katie was off to a flyer scoring 8 shots to Jack's 4 after 10 ends. Katie scored 2 shots over the next 2 ends with Jack scoring just 3 shots over the next 3 ends to trail 10-7 going into the last end. Jack was holding with his first 2 bowls and looked like he was going to get at least a draw to take it into an extra end but Katie played a wonderful bowl to win the end & game 11-7.
After 16 ends only singles were scored exept for 2 ends where they both scored 2 shots each. A very tight game.
This was the end of Scarborough's involvement.
In the plate final Hollie Arundel met James Baxter after Arundel beat Edward Wills & Baxter beat Logan.
Hollie lost last year's plate final but this time she went one better winning but after a big scare from Baxter who was trailing 9-1 to come back to 9-8 down only for Arundel to win 11-8.
In the Main final sisters Katie & Holly Baxter met again as last year but this year Katie was the winner in another very close game winning 13-12.

Regional School of Excellence at Darlington
On Sunday 21st March it was an early start for James Brown, Jack Bird & John Hall as we had to be at Darlington for 9am for the Regional School of Excellence. With the top two Seniors & top two juniors going to the National School of Excellence at Solihull on 5th December.

As in the earlier round at York it was a round robin singles format with only 3 bowls & 7ends in the morning followed by the skills exercises. Each singles game was worth 10 points with a draw 5 points.

All 32 players were from either Durham or Yorkshire.
John Hall in the senior group played his 3 matches and won one and after his skills tests scored 86 points which placed him 6th out of 16.

Jack bird & James Brown were in the same junior group. James won the battle when they played each other and both players won two out of the three matches. After they had finished the skills tests Jack had 77 points & James 71. This placed Jack 5th & James 6th out of 16.
This meant that unfortunately non of the boys qualified to go to Solihull in December.
In the final of the seniors Sam Arundel from Yorkshire lost to Keith Burton from Durham.
In the junior final Lydia Cutmore Yorkshire won Noah Cummings from Durham with the last bowl in the match. All four players will represent the Northern Region at the National stage.
All the players were awarded certificates for attending the day.

January Tournament postponed due to the bad weather
Group photo of all 14 teams who took part
On Sunday 14th March we held our January Tournament postponed due to the bad weather.
14 teams took part from Darlington,South Shields, Redcar,Thornaby,Selby, Hornsea with 4 teams from us with 14 of our juniors taking part.
Each match is a 2 wood triples format. Each game lasted 50 mins or 9 ends whichever came first. After 3 games each the top 8 teams go into the main competition with the last 6 in their own plate competition.
Scarborough "A" which had Jack Bird, Jonny Stanger & skip John Hall were up against Darlington "A" and after 8 ends it was tied at 6 shots all. Darlington managed to sqeeze the winning shot to win.
Scarborough "B" which had Alyssa Sanchez, Harry Brown & skip Hannah Pacey were against Darlington "C". After 5 ends it was close with Darlington 4-3 up unfortunately we could not score again but each end was close as Darlington only scored singles on last 4 ends to win 8-3.
Scarborough "C" had Nigel Sanchez, Ben Grahamslaw & skip Matthew Bell against Thornaby "B". Thornaby were out of the blocks very quickly and after 5 ends were leading 6-1 and scored 6 shots in the last 2 ends for us to lose 12-1.
Our 4th team was James Brown, Ryan Cammish & skip Joseph Mann against South Shields again a close start after 5 ends we led 3-2 we dropped 4 shots on the 6th end and won the last 3 ends with singles for South Shields to win 9-3.
In the 2nd match Scarborough "A" Jack, Jonny & John were against Scarborough "C" this time playing Kaitlyn Roye,Matthew Bell & Ben Grahamslaw. The "A" team showed their experience and ran away to a 22-2 win but the juniors in the "C" team never gave up.
Scarborough "B" Lauren Pacey (aged 7) with Harry Brown & Hannah Pacey played Thornaby "A" and we pushed Thornaby all the way, after 5 ends we were behind 4-5 but 4 shots by Thornaby on the last 2 ends to win 9-4.
Our Scarborough "D" team of James Brown, Ryan Cammish & Joseph Mann came up against Redcar and were trailing 6-2 after 6 ends but finished really well scoring 7 shots over the last 3 ends to win 9-6.
In the 3rd round our unchanged "A" team of Bird, Stanger & Hall took on Selby and won 9-5 taking revenge for the lose against them in the U18 semi final Challenge Cup at York last weekend.
"B" team of Alyssa Sanchez, Harry Brown & Hannah Pacey were up against a strong Hornsea "B" team and found it hard going losing 3-12.
"C" team Nigel Sanchez, Bell & Grahamslaw went down fighting 2-12.
"D" team of Cammish,Mann & James Brown had a fantastic match winning a good Darlington "A" team 12-7.
The quarter finals were now a straight knockout still 9 ends or 50 mins.
In the plate Selby won Darlington "A". Scarborough "B" Lauren & Hannah Pacey with Harry Brown won a great game 10-5 v Darlington "C".
Scarborough "C" Roye,Bell & Grahamslaw lost 18-3.
In the main comp our "A" team Bird, Stanger & Hall were now getting into gear and blew away Darlington "B" 14-2.Scarborough "D" Mann,Cammish & James Brown were growing in confidence and won a very close game 9-8 over Thornaby "B".
In the semi final in the plate Scarborough "B" played Darlington "C" again as they made it through as the best losers on shot difference. This was closer with us making the final winning 10-9 a brilliant display.
In the 3rd/4th playoff Darlington "C" won easily 15-1 against Redcar.
The final of the plate was our "B" team v Selby with our team struggling to keep the concontration levels after a long day, losing 5-12. Still a great effort today using Lauren Pacey & Alyssa Sanchez playing in their first competition.
In the main comp semi final our "D" team Cammish,Mann & James Brown had to fight all the way against Hornsea "A" winning 6-4.
In the other semi final our "A" team were up against Thornaby "A" it was another close battle on the 7th end saw them level on 7 each. we were holding a brilliant 4 shots and with one more end to play would think they had won. Their skip had other ideas and fired & "killed" the end. Once again we were in control holding 3 shots and again their skip fired, only for him to miss so we won 10-7.
For the 3rd/4th positions Thornaby "A" won v Hornsea "A" on the last end 8-7 with a single shot.
So in the final of the main comp were Scarborough "A" v "D" which meant that whatever happened we were going to hold onto the cup we won last year.
This was a fantastic final with Mann,Cammish & James Brown playing out of their skins against the more experienced "A" team of Bird,Stanger & Hall. At 6 ends the "D" team deserved to be leading 6-5 and took the next 2 ends with singles to lead 8-5. The "A" team had other ideas and came back with 2 singles to trail 7-8 and this went down to the last end. A real close finish with the "A" team taking 2 shots to sneak it 9-8 a wonderful match to watch which neither team deserved to lose. A fitting final.

The semi-final of the Challenge Cup at York
On Saturday 6th March we travelled to York to play in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup where the top 4 teams play in a straight knockout.
Before we started our team were presented with their trophies for winning this years League with Hornsea as Runners Up.
Unfortunately Hannah Pacey was unable to travel due to her not being well regarding her diabetes.
Each match was over 2 hours or 15 ends whichever came first.
Our match was against Selby on one rink James Brown,Joseph Mann & skip Jonny Stanger. we started well 2 up after 2 ends but we dropped 12 shots over the next 4 ends giving Selby a 10 shots lead which we could not pull back. Finishing on the losing end 7-17.

On the other rink was Jack Bird, Harry Brown & skip John Hall, again we started well 2 up after 2 ends and 4 each on 5 ends. This game was close throughout and after 11 ends we were behind 8-9. Looking over the other rink we knew we had to win the aggregate to go into the final. So they were trying to "make" more shots by attacking the away bowls to create more. Unfortunately we did not get the result and lost 10 -14.
Selby played really well & deserved to go through to the final.

In the other semi was Hornsea & York / New Earswick with Hornsea winning both rinks.
In the final Selby went on to win 33 -19 against Hornsea.

Yorkshire League Match at Selby
On Sunday 31st January we travelled to Selby to play our latest round of matches in the U18 Yorkshire League.
Each match is 2 hours or 15 ends whichever comes first.
Our first match was against the hosts Selby.
On one rink we had James Brown, Hannah Pacey & skip Jonny Stanger. After 3 ends only 3 shots had been scored with us trailing 2-1, on the 4th end we had a fantastic display and picked up 6 shots to now lead 7-2.
Over the next 2 ends we traded one shot each to still lead 8-3 but Selby came back with a score of 4 to cut our lead to just one shot. We then played a spell of bowling to put the game out of reach for Selby, we scored 2 shots, another 6 & 3 over the next 3 ends to lead 19-7 after 10 ends. Selby never gave up and scored 7 shots to our 2 in the last 5 ends but we ran out worthy winners 21-14.
On our other rink Jack Bird, Harry Brown & skip John Hall were behind in the early stages 3 shots after 3 ends, on the 4th end we scored a brilliant 5 shots. Selby came back with 2 singles to level at 5 each after 6 ends.
We then pulled out some great bowling to take a couple of 3's and a single over the next 3 ends to stretch out a lead 12-5. We kept the game very tight restricting them to 3 singles and a two with us scoring a single and a 3 to win 16-10.
This gave us the fantastic start we needed to keep us top of the league scoring the maximum 6 points with an aggregate shots 37-24.

After a short break we were up against 2nd place in the league a combined team from York & New Earswick.
James, Hannah & Jonny had a real close game at 5 ends we led 4-3. Each side playing some very good conversion shots and after 11 ends we led 10-8. They won the next 2 ends with two shots & a single to go back into the lead 11-10 after 13 ends. We scored a single to level it going into the last end every score in the match had been singles or 2's. Unfortunately we could not hold on and dropped 4 shots to lose 15-11.
Jack, Harry & John were out of the blocks quick, scoring 8 shots in the first 5 ends to nil. York/New Earswick scored 3 shots on the 6th end. We then just played them off the rink as everything they did we did better, scoring 17 shots over the next 7 ends to lead 25-3, their skip fired on the 14th and last end and hit the jack to finish with 2 shots. We ran out comfortable winners 25-5. With our other rink scoring so well we won on aggregate 36-20 therefore scoring another 4 points.
This concludes our season in the league as the last date for matches on 14th February at Thornaby is our bye.

This means according to my calculations (to be confirmed) we finished on 36 points and the nearest team is York/New Earswick who have so far scored 23 points after today. So even if they win all 4 games at Thornaby can only score 12 points and would finish on 35 points. This would mean we are winners of this years league. The top 4 clubs will meet on 7th March to play a semi - final & final of the Under18's Challenge Trophy at a venue still to be decided.
So we have that to look forward to, but again as throughout all the season our juniors have proven to be deserved winners.

I would also like to dedicate this success to Chris Burton who I'm sure is looking down feeling so proud of these juniors as all the other coaches and helpers involved.

On Sunday 24th January 6 juniors were out on the road early to play at York & District Bowls Club for this years Yorkshire Invitation Singles starting at 9am! Following the singles matches which scored 10 points for a win & 5 for a draw, each player tackled different skill tests to score extra points.

There was two age groups 8-15 (juniors) and 15-18 (seniors)

In the junior group was Joe Usher, Harry & James Brown & Jack Bird.
In the senior group was Jonny Stanger & John Hall.

Each singles match was over 7 ends but with only 3 bowls.

He lost a very close match losing 6-5 to Neil Macdonald from New Earswick.
He struggled in his third game against R Davies from Selby losing 7-3.
Harry won his first match 6-4 against H Logan from Selby.
In Harry's next match he scored a single on the last end to draw 5 all against Holly Arundale from Selby.
As a junior from Hornsea did not attend Harry had a bye.
James & Jack were in the same group and played their first match against each other with Jack winning 9-2.
James won his next 2 matches against James Baxter from Hornsea 7-1 & F Simpson from Harrogate 7-5.
Jack won his next 2 matches also 14-0 against F Simpson (Harrogate) & 8-2 v James Baxter (Hornsea).
John & Jonny were also drawn in the same group together in the seniors.
They played against each other in the first match with John winning 6-2.
John lost his next match 10-3 to Connor Qualter from York.
He won 9-1 against J Logan from Selby & 6-2 against Amy King from York.
Jonny lost 6-3 against Connor Qualter (York) also lost his next match with a very tight finish 6-5 against James Logan (Selby). Finishing off the singles with a win 7-5 against Amy King (York).

Following an afternoon of skill exercises the points were all totalled up.

The highest scoring four players from the junior group & senior group would play a singles semi final of 7 ends, with the two winners going through to represent Yorkshire later in the season.

In the Seniors C Qualter (York) 108 points, K Baxter (Hornsea) 106, John Hall 101 points & L Clarke (York) 99 points.

John played Katie Baxter in the semi final this was a tight struggle 3 all after 5 ends. Katie won the last 2 ends with singles to win 5-3. John very close to reaching the final. The other semi an all York affair had C Qualter winning 7-4 against L Clarke. Katie went on to win C Qualter in the final with it being 5 all after 6 ends and gaining a single on the last end.

In the junior section our Jack Bird was top with 113 points, Holly Arundel (Selby) 111, Lydia Cutmore(Hornsea) 93 & R Davies (Selby) 84.

Jack started well in his semi leading 4-2 after 4 ends. Scored 2 more on the 5th end to lead 6-2 and closed the game out with 2 more singles over the last 2 ends to win 8-2.
In the other semi L Cutmore (Hornsea) lost the last end with a single to lose 7-6 to H Arundel (Selby).
Jack started well with 3 shots on the 1st end but Holly came back with 3 shots on the 2nd end. They traded shots all the way as it was another close finish 6 each going into the last end with unfortunately for Jack, Holly winning it with a single.
So Jack will represent Yorkshire in the 8-15 age group.
Every player was presented with a certificate for taking part from York & District's Club Vice President.
All four finalists were given pens.

There were a lot of tired spectators never mind the bowlers!! As it was nearly 8 hours for the players on & off the rink.
Still all of our players gave a very good display all day and even though they were tired they enjoyed the experience, with one of them saying he was disappointed he did not play better but enjoyed it so much he "can't wait for next year"!!

Once again a very proud coach

U18's League. Scarborough stay top of league at Hornsea
On Sunday 17th January Scarborough played their next round of matches for this seasons U18 League at Hornsea.
Each match was 2 hours or 15 ends whichever came first.

In the first game we played against our nearest rivals Hornsea, as we are currently top in the league. James Brown, Hannah Pacey & skip Jonny Stanger started really well with a close start leading 4-3 after 5 ends & 8 all after 10 ends. All three of our players continued to keep the pressure on and scored 3 shots on the 11th end they came back with 1shot on the next, we came back with 2 shots on the 13th end and held Hornsea's attack to 2 singles on the last 2 ends for us to win a fantastic game 13-11.

On the other rink was Jack Bird, Harry Brown with skip John Hall. A very good start leading 8-4 after 5 ends. At 10 ends we had stretched the lead to 13-8 with some brilliant bowling. We scored a fantastic 4 shots on the 11th end to lead 17-8 but back came Hornsea with 6 shots over the next 3 ends to close the gap to just 3 shots with the last end to play. Unfortunately we lost it by 4 shots to give Hornsea an unlikely win by 1 shot. Even though they lost their rink they contributed to the aggregate win of 30-29 so we scored 4 points out of the possible 6. A great result against the home team.

A short break of 30 mins and we were back on the rinks this time up against a combined team this season of York & New Earswick.
our first rink of Hannah, James & Jonny started well again level at 5 ends on 4 each. We pulled away to lead 13-5 at 10 ends and ran out winners 15-10 after only scoring on 13 ends in the time allowed.

On the other rink was Jack, Harry & John. We started very well leading 8-1 after 5 ends. We continued to score well and lead 15-5 at 10 ends we were in command winning 18-6. So we took a maximum 6 points aggregate score 33-16.

We next go to Selby on 31st January to see if we can stay top of the league.

Steven Broadbent and John Hall win the Christmas Competition 2009
Sunday 20th December saw 13 juniors managing to fight their way into the Bowls Centre as we held our Christmas Competition.
The format was doing different bowling skills over 5 rinks with each junior scoring on how well they did.

The group was split into the more experienced being in the "seniors" and the less experienced in the "juniors".
After nearly 2 hours the winner in the juniors was Steven Broadbent a great achievement as only a few weeks ago he had badly broken his leg. This was the first time he had bowled since. (using his crutch)

Runner up only 1 point behind was Alyssa Sanchez.
In the seniors John Hall won with David Sessions as runner up.

I thanked all the juniors for taking part also all the coaches/helpers.
All the juniors were handed a Christmas card with a present from the coaches & helpers. Derek from Catering brought in a bag of sweets.

Under 18's League

On Sunday 6th December Scarborough played their next round of matches for this seasons U18 League.
Each match was 2 hours or 15 ends whichever came first.

In the first game we played against Thornaby. Joseph Mann, Hannah Pacey & skip Jonny Stanger started really well leading 9-5 after 5 ends & 13-6 after 10 ends. Thornaby came back with 3 shots over ends 11 & 12 to cut our lead to 13-9. We came back strong winning the next two ends with a 3 & 1 to stretch the lead to 17-9. Thornaby won a single on the last end.

On the other rink was Jack Bird, James Brown with skip John Hall. A very close match to start with as it was level at 4 shots each after 5 ends. We scored a brilliant 5 shots on the 6th end but back came Thornaby with 7 shots over the next 4 ends. We now were behind 11-9 at 10 ends. Our juniors dug deep to win the last 5 ends with 7 shots to win 17-11.
A fantastic achievement to win both rinks and take the maximum 6 points with a 34-21 aggregate score.

A short break of 30 mins and we were back on the rinks this time up against Selby.
We changed the teams in the second match to give more juniors a game. David Sessions with Hannah Pacey & skip Jonny Stanger tried hard but could not find the form from the first game. We struggled but never gave up but lost 24-3.
On the other rink was Jack Bird, Harry Brown & skip John Hall. We started very well leading 9-1 after 5 ends. We continued to score well in a role reversal from our other rink. At 10 ends we were in command leading 17-2. We continued winning 23-4, unfortunately we lost the aggregate by 2 shots. Therefore we scored 2 points and Selby scored 4.

We will be top of the league at present, a break now for Christmas & New Year. Our next match is on 17th January at Hornsea.

Scarborough hosts first of this seasons U18 League matches.

On Sunday 22nd November Scarborough were hosts for this seasons first U18 League matches.
Each match was 2 hours or 15 ends whichever came first.

In the first game we played against Hornsea. Joseph Mann Hannah Pacey & skip David Sessions fought really well and never gave up, trailing 10-3 after 10 ends & 16-3 after 13 ends finishing well with the last 2 ends scoring 2 shots on each, to lose 7-16. All the scores were either singles or 2's.
On the other rink was Harry Brown with Jonny Stanger & skip John Hall. This was a great display from our team never looking in danger of losing this 16-1 up after 10 ends and running out 23-3 winners after 15 ends. We scored 2 points for the rink win & 2 points for the aggregate so a good start with 4 points out of 6.

A short break of 30 mins and we were back on the rinks this time up against Thornaby.
We changed the teams in the second match to give more juniors a game. Owen Price with Hannah Pacey & skip John Hall played very well and at 10 ends led 10=6. On the 11th end we scored a fantastic 4 shots to now lead 14-6. This is when the sport can be very cruel as over the next 4 ends we out bowled the Thornaby team but their skip Joe Ballentine a U 25 Yorkshire player had ome unbelievable luck coming in with weight and richocheting off several bowls to turn the game on its head. They scored 6 shots over three ends to go into the last end trailing us 14-12. We were one down and looking for an overall win by one shot when Joe played a brilliant last bowl to knock our woods out of the head ad they scored a 6 to win 18-14.
On the other rink was Joseph Mann with James Brown & skip Jonny Stanger. We started slowly losing the first 3 ends to singles but picked up 3 shots on the 4th end to level it. We scored 2 shots on the next 3 ends to now lead 9-3. Thornaby cam back with 5 shots over the next 2 ends, cutting our lead to one shot 9-8. We continued to play well and scored 8 shots over 5 ends to extend our lead to 17-8. We dropped 2 shots on the last end to run out winners 17-10. This again meant that we scored 4 points from 6. A good platform to take to New Earswick on the 6th December.

In the other matches today the first game was Selby v Thornaby and both teams won one rink each and drew the aggregate score so both teams scored 3 points each.

Hornsea played Selby in the second game and Hornsea ran out winners on both rinks scoring a maximum 6 points. This places them joint top with us on 8 points but we have a better shots difference.

Scarborough Welcomes Visitors from South Shields
On Saturday 10th October we had 12 junior members playing host to South Shields. There were 4 triple matches over 2 hours.
It was a chance to give the newer players a chance to gain experience in a match situation.

David Cotterill, Nigel Sanchez & sip Matthew Bell tried really hard, there South Shields skip played some wonderful conversion shots to stop us scoring more losing 6-17.
On another rink we had Ryan Cammish, Benjamin Grahamslaw & skip Harry Brown, they had a good game leading in the early stages 8-4 but we lost 9 shots over 5 ends to tail 8-13 we picked up 2 shots on the last end to lose 10 - 13.

The 3rd match was Alyssa Sanchez, Joseph Mann & skip Jonny Stanger. We started slowly trailing 1-8 after 7 ends. We scored 5 shots over the next 5 ends to close the gap to 6-8. South Shields scored 2 singles on the next 2 ends to now lead 10-6 but we held our nerve and finished with a fantastic 4 shots to draw 10 -10 a fitting result.
Our last match saw Lauren Pacey, Steven Broadbent & skip John Hall. We lost the first 2 ends with 1 shot on each end. Over the next 3 ends we came back and scored 7 shots. We lost another single shot on the next end and came back again with 6 more shots over the next 3 ends to pull away to 14-3 lead. South Shields scored 3 more singles and we scored another one to win comfortably 15-6. Keeping South Shields to scoring only 6 singles all game.
The total scores were close with Scarborough on 41 & South Shields 46.
I thanked South Shields for coming and playing 4 really good games & said they would be most welcome to visit us again in the future.
Their representatives Graham & Bob thanked us all for the welcome & the juniors enjoyed the experience of playing another set of juniors. They also thanked Derek & catering staff for the buffet.
We hope there will be a re-match in the near future.

Jack Bird in the National Men's U25 singles for the Yorkshire area at Harrogate.

While we were battling it out with South Shields 12 year old Jack Bird was representing Scarborough in the National Men's U25 singles for the Yorkshire area at Harrogate.
Each match was over 2 sets with a deciding 3 ends tie breaker if required.

Jack was drawn to play David Attwood from York. Jack started well winning the first 3 ends with singles, dropping 7 shots over the next 3 ends. Jack scoring another single with Attwood finishing strongly with the last 2 ends bringing 2 singles to win the first set 9-4.
In the second set Jack picked up 2 shots on the first end, Attwood scored a single, Jack coming back with 3 shots over next 2 ends. Attwood bounced back again with 4 shots on the next 3 ends to level at 5 - 5 Jack was not to be put off and won the last 2 ends with 3 shots to win the set 8-5.
Tie break only one shot would count over the 3 ends in the tie break.
Attwood won the first end with Jack coming back in the second to take to the 3rd & final end in the match. Jack was in command with 3 good bowls & Attwood's first 3 all short. His last bowl came in & rested Jacks bowls to hold shot with Jack playing his last bowl needed to either rest Attwood's shot bowl or trail the jack to his other bowls would win it, Jack just missed it. It could not have been a closer game.
Attwood went on to win his semi-final against Sam Arundale & then the final against Paul Humphries. So Attwood will represent Yorkshire. Attwood also has England trials in November. So great credit to Jack for taking him right to the very end of their game.

After 2 matches 3 teams were still unbeaten. At the end of nearly 2 hours bowling only 2 teams were on max 6 points so it went to shot difference and in second place with 6 points and a plus 18 shots was Ryan Cammish & John Hall.
With the winners being Lauren Pacey & James Brown with 6 points & plus 28 shots.

Scarborough Juniors beat Ferryhill 29-13
During the afternoon of Sunday 4th October Ferryhill were a visiting club to play against our club and because they were bringing 4 juniors they wanted to play against our juniors.
So Jack Bird, Hannah Pacey, Jonny Stanger & John Hall all played on one rink against them.
It was a very good match with excellent bowling from both teams but mid way through we pulled away and never looked back, winning 29-13 after 21 ends and over 3 hours bowling.

Jack Bird represents Yorkshire in the Three Rinks Championship held at Newton Hall Blackpool.
On Saturday 3rd October Jack Bird represented Yorkshire in the Three Rinks Championship held at newton Hall Blackpool.
The competition was between Yorkshire, Worcestershire, Lancashire & Cumbria. Even though most of the Counties played full County/Internationals. Yorkshire had two out of the three rinks all U25! Each match was 15ends or 2hrs 15mins. 2 points for a win on each rink and an extra 2 points for overall aggregate.
It was an early start for Jack as the first match started at 10am!
Jack was at no 2 with in a team with Ben Suggitt at lead Sam Arundell at 3 and skip Scot Burrell, the first match was against Lancs.
After 5 ends it was level at 3 all, at 10 ends it was still close but we were behind 6-8. on the next end they scored a single to lead 9-6 on the next 2 ends they were "killed" firstly by Scott as we were in trouble & on the next end by Lancs as they were in trouble. Lancs went on to score another 5 shots over the next 3 ends to win 14-6 by the 2hrs 15mins.
Yorkshire only won one rink to score two points.
In the second match it was Cumbria who we played. At 5 ends we were behind 1-6 & at 10 ends still behind 5-9. We won the next two ends with 1 & 2 shots to trail by one shot 8-9 for Cumbria to score 2 shots on the next to lead 11-8 we came back strongly over the last two ends with a single (still 2 behind) but a fantastic 7 on the last to win 16-11. In fact all three rinks won to take the max 8 points.
The last match against Worcs again was very close all the way through with us trailing 6-8 at 10 ends& 6-10 at 12 ends for again the younsters to play really well at the end to take the last 3 ends with a 2 score on each end to win 12-10. This was the only rink to win. Another great learning experience against some really top players.
Jack is now looking forward to next Saturday at Harrogate in the U25 Regional singles quarter finals. We all wish him well.

Three Scarborough lads battle for Yorkshire at York
On Saturday 26th September Jack Bird, Jonny Stanger & John Hall all played at York IBC.
They were playing against International & County players from all around the Country as The Civil Service.

The games lasted 4 hours Yorkshire had 3 rinks of U25 & 3 rinks Yorkshire players.

John Hall played lead on his rink with J Baxter from Hornsea, D Cowap from Thornaby and skipped by P Humphries from York.
They struggled from the early stages and were behind at 5 ends 3-8 not managing to score over the next 5 ends now behind 3-19.

They managed to pull a little backn the next 5 ends trailing 8-22. The small resurgence did notlast long losing 11-30.

Jack bird led with Jonny Stanger at two with S Packer from Huddersfield and U2 Manager Ian Paddy skipping as original player M Hughes from Leeds was still involved in a crown green Champion of Champions competition and the reserve was not available due to being unable to play due to a bus running over his foot!!

This was a close affair after 5 ends we trailed 1-5 and it looked like the writing was on the wall. Over the next 5 ends they pulled it back

Jack Bird, Jonny Stanger & John Hall
to lead 10-8. The next 5 ends we still kept the 4 shot lead now 16-12. Civil Service came back over the next 3 ends cutting it to us leading17-16. At 20 ends it was all square at 17 each. Unfortunately the last 2 ends we struggled due to playing the full 4 hours and we dropped 2 three's on ends 22 & 23. Losing 23-17. Civil Service had "killed" 2 ends during the match.

On our other rink was B Suggitt (Thornaby) J Logan & S Arundell both from Selby skip S Burrell (Hornsea). Another close game leading 4-1 10-5 at 5 & 10 ends respectively. Civil Service came back to close the gap to 13-12 a 15 ends. At 18 ends we still led 17-14 but again we trailed off near the latter stages of the game to lose by 2 shots 17-19.

On the other 3 rinks yorkshire lost one match 4-30 drew 25 all & won the only rink 29-14.
Final shots score was 103 -141 Civil Service winning but a real good challenge for the U25 Yorkshire players.
It was even mentioned that most club players would struggle against the quality of players on the opposition teams. A good test for them all.

The next match is on 3rd October at Newton Hall Blackpool. Our lads will be asked to go to York over the next couple of weeks working to make the team to play Durham on 25th October.
