England Scotland match report

Scarborough Indoor Bowls Club hosted a Charity Match between Scotland and England, on Saturday April 6th, in Aid of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus… wonderful support that raised a lot of money, as yet unsure of amount raised. An afternoon of great entertainment, noise at times phenomenal, all of which added to the fun of the afternoon.

Spectators treated to a few hours of great comedy, whilst not forgetting the outstanding expertise of all the bowlers taking part. Must mention Scarborough’s own youngsters who were chosen to be part of the England Team…..Jack Bird, Matthew Bell and young Nathan Richards…Three young men who have been coached since their “short trouser” days as little boys, by an excellent team of coaches within the club who give up every Sunday morning to spend time with the junior section…so many of these juniors enjoying early successes..good luck to them all, and a huge thank you to their coaches. Sorry I digressed a bit there.

The exciting afternoon finished with an equally exciting finish…no one, with one end to go could have predicted the outcome of the match such was the skill of the skips who had to bowl their last wood, the noise of their respective teams trying to encourage them to send that all important last wood must have done nothing to calm the thoughts of a very nervous bowler…Scotland’s young man went onto the mat..all went silent, the wood made it’s way to the head, fantastic shot the whole place erupted as Scotland took the lead. After the usual noisy encouragement for our own Jack Bird, who was to bowl the last wood of the match, the place went silent again as the wood left his hand, it looked promising….the shouts as it hit the spot said it all, incredible shot under so much pressure took the game to a draw.

Scotland retained the Trophy as they were last years winners. Well done Scotland…and a great big thank you to both teams, spectators and club volunteers alike for putting on such a great show and giving Scarborough’s Indoor Bowls well deserved praise and hopefully a little bit of fame!!!!
